MIKE LA TICKET GIVEAWAY CONTEST #2

Photo credit: Jack Lebowitz (c) 2016

As we promised several months ago, this is the second installment of a contest to win a pair of tickets to Mike's Friday January 29th show at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, courtesy of the promoter, Goldenvoice.

Like the first, perhaps too easy contest which was quickly solved and might have had too many clues within the question, the question is about Mike's non-musical artistic endeavors, this time, about the opening reception of a gallery exhibition of colored acrylic scupltures Mike did in collaboration with his mother who is an artist and sculptor. Here are the questions, answer in the comments below, first correct answer wins (or closest if no totally correct answers in the decision of the judges):

1. Explain what is going on here.

2. Approximately when (month, year) and where (place) was this photo taken?

3. What eponymous artwork related to Phish is Mike's mother also known for?

CadillacRainb0ws oh man, nice giveaway. I live on the otherside of the country so no chance I can make it to the show. Any consolation prizes in lieu of tix? lol

CadillacRainb0ws 1. This is an interactive art exhibit. Mike Gordon's mother created the sculptures and Mike recorded sounds to go along with it. As you approach the sculpture and move around (or dance), it plays music and lights up - this picture is of a demonstration at the art exhibit
2. Jan/Feb 2010, Boston Children's Museum
3. She is responsible for the creation of the "Minkin backdrops" that were used on stage in 1994

jackl @CadillacRainbows

Pretty good clues for someone who lives on the West Coast and can actually use the tickets (they are comp tickets so it isn't really possible to give them away for face).

Your answers, or googling skills, were good enough though that our panel of judges does want to give you a consolation prize, a limited edition variant A.J. Masthay poster for The Phisn Companion 3d Ed. of equal or greater value than the Mike face tickets, so PM me with your mailing address. Congrats!!

Now, someone who can actually use the Mike tickets (this is required), can you give us a TOTALLY correct answer. Bid hint: CadillacRainbows nailed #1, but #2 is totally wrong and #3 isn't totally right.

Good luck!

jackl OK, I take the comment about #3 back. According to the Minkin song history written by Julia Mordaunt, who I must concede is more of an expert on all things Mike than just about anyone, says the backdrops were used at select shows from 1991-4. I misremember them being retired in the spring/summer of 1993, at the time Kuroda first got his signature moving laser lights in addition to typical theatrical "can" floodlights, because the plastic backdrops didn't seem to work well with the Altstar "movers" because of reflections.

So...can anyone who absolutely can and will use the tickets give us the correct answer to #2? Another hint tomorrow if someone can't.

jackl Correct Mrkitty. March 10, 2006, the first opening of this exhibit (there were some others later on as some of the other "contestants" have mentioned.

PM me your address and enjoy the show! The tickets will be on their way to you overnight on Monday. Please let me know whether you are in an area that requires a signature for delivery or whether that can be waived.

Thanks for playing everyone.

watsonb37 Everyone got #1 wrong. It's the Tin Man posing as a woman dancing to Mike's Song. In attendance was Where's Waldo and a very confused kid in a red jacket. Duh.

toddwcorey 1) Janet Jackson has had yet another wardrobe malfunction.

2) This is from a Bernie Sanders rally last Tuesday.

3) Mike's mom is widely believed to be the inspiration for the song, "Faht."
