MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 166

After a short, revitalizing hiatus -- taken to avoid becoming a charicature of itself, or worse yet, a nostalgia act -- Phish.net's Mystery Jam Monday is back! And as with MJM #165, this one's brought to you by the MJM OG himself, @RabeldyNugs. As usual, this week's winner will receive an MP3 download courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of the mystery jam clip. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. Good luck!

Answer: @mcgrupp81 wins his fourth MJM by IDing the Bowie-esque 12/9/97 Simple. Great job!

Well done. I haven't listened to this one in a while. it's getting tossed in the rotation this week!!
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten this is probably the least discussed show of fall 97

, comment by schvice
schvice Seems to me that could be added to the Bowie tease chart, no?
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer @mcgrupp81: very nice win my friend! I was looking in '97 and '98 but couldn't pin this to a Fall '97 show despite knowing the tour very well.

From the @waxbanks review:
The meat of Set II is the 37-minute Simple > Timber, a completely *seamless* multipart improvisation that evolves from the delicate Simple outro form to a more assertive one-chord rock-anthem groove and beyond. After one of those nervewracking funk grooves that so often acted as bridging passages in those days (the way complex ambient spaces have lately served as musical glue in 2009-10), the jam cools back down. Fish suggests Bowie; Trey has other ideas; amid the resulting engine-room noise Fish transforms the Bowie hi-hat line into the Timber drumbeat, the whole band picks up on the suggestion, and we're right into a slightly mutated take on that song. The Timber jam is, as ever, an eerie minor-key stomp - and it ends wonderfully, in quiet.

I think I know what I'm listening to today! @RabeldyNugs and @bl002e: glad to see the MJM back. Keep 'em coming!

Call it luck. I woke up this morning and right before I went out to work I checked the weather and to see if there was a mystery jam. I had already reached the acceptance stage of what I thought was the end of MJM so I was pleased to see a jam. A fall 97 jam lasting to the next day is luck.

Question for @bl002e --I am looking at a Error-unsupported audio type or file path on my laptop. On my other laptop, I can play the clip. On my work computer I can't play the clip. Do I need to be using a certain internet browser or is it related to the version of Windows. I don't know if anybody else experienced this but I wanted to throw out the question in case something has permanently changed with the type of file that is being played through the site. Thank You again for your hard work.

Brandonclick77 It's bad when you've been to mjm shows and you don't recognize the jam, durr
, comment by phishatmsg
phishatmsg Well it figures...I was at this friggin show at PSU. at 27:52 is when the clip starts (SO characteristic because its just Fishman quiet, by himself for about 12seconds and then Treyboy just lights a bottle rocket (or so it sounds)...I bet most of us were listening to the beginning of MANY Bowies...QUITE a fakeout...> Timber, and yes - not many waves made at all about this show. This was fun :)
