Mystery Jam Monday Part 73

Posted 7 months ago by lumpblockclod - 26 comments Link: http://phi.sh/b/4ea555ef, posted in the Audio category (841 listens)

For the 73rd consecutive week, the Blog is proud to bring you another Mystery Jam. As usual, we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). The hint will come on Tuesday and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Tuesday Hint: No hint needed this week.

Wednesday Answer: It's the 7/30/97 "Bowie" -> "Cities" -> "Bowie," specifically the segue into "Cities." So bl002e is our winner for the second time in four weeks. The Blog will be back on Mon. with another Mystery Jam.

BrotherWow. I've heard of the Bowie> Cities> Bowie but I've never listened and...wow when I pushed play and that funk came out of my speakers I was a little shocked that was Phish. They get funky of course but wow that little clip blew me away!

Penn42Does anyone know where a fellow could get a good recording of this jam? The copy I have is not too great. What is the source of this clip they used? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Yep, summer '97 is as funky as Phish got. Even though the fall tour was probably better, it was a bit less funky and a bit more spacey than the summer.

Snboard for you buddy. I think it was a from the archives. Get the whole thing though. I've listened to disc one so many times.

Yeah, as a couple of commenters smartly point out repeatedly on these boards, Fall 97's great strength wasn't funk as such, it was the way funk intermingled with all the other amazing shit the band was doing. Deep ambient music, weird droning grooves, clever melodies, thick textures...the music is just so intense in comparison to the languor of summer.

DoktahgonzoAs much as it pains me to say it, I would almost say that the blog would be best served avoiding '97 entirely in the future, given that so much of it can be so distinctive & it has been digested so thoroughly by many of us, that MJ's like this just don't have a prayer. Maybe some jams from the spring might work, but Summer/Fall? Fugitaboutit.
