Chart: Phish vs Dead, Annual Shows

Posted 10 months ago by Lemuria - 15 comments Link: http://phi.sh/b/4e262182, posted in the Image category

Phish’s history of performances stretches two years shorter than the Grateful Dead’s so far, but already includes more shows (by several hundred), peak years with nearly double the Dead’s peaks, and half as many sudden drops (whereas some years the Dead played fewer and/or shorter tours).

On the other hand, Phish has had more years with no shows, whereas the Dead took a "hiatus" during 1975 but played several shows that year. Moreover, excluding their festivals, Phish tours typically hit arenas and sheds, avoiding the stadiums that became a key element of Dead tour. Finally, Phish's performance count has been trending downward for over two decades, while the Dead generally trended upwards for three.

MJZ1974Am I reding this correctly...that Phish has played "several hundred" more shows than The Dead?

That doesn't sound right...

LemuriaGet out of your idioms, @Somantin. It's not fair to say an apple lacks citrus, or to attack an orange for its color. But the apple tree in my yard won't have ripe fruit until September, and the orange tree is about to have its second harvest this year.

The world turns on the frequency of things, and on explanations for variable frequencies. If you're a foe of comparison, you've come to the wrong place.

MJZ1974According to Deadbase,

1977 = 60 shows
1978 = 80 shows
1979 = 75 shows
1980 = 86 shows
1981 = 82 shows
1982 = 61 shows
1983 = 66 shows
1984 = 64 shows
1985 = 71 shows

I'll stop there. This data is so far off it isn't even worth analyzing.

I totally cop to the possibility of bad GData, and welcome improvements. I'm confident that our team has the Phish side of the equation locked up. What site has the flip side, in a format I can cut-and-paste a list of all show dates?

Correct. This statistical "graph" should just be taken off now.
